What Makes a Power Chair Truly Portable?
The word portable appears everywhere when shopping for a power chair. But what actually makes a power chair portable?
Is it simply a chair that folds? Does it have to be lightweight? Does it need to fit in the trunk of a car? And how much should someone realistically be expected to lift?
The answer is that portability is not determined by a single specification.
A truly portable power chair combines several characteristics: manageable weight, compact folded dimensions, an easy folding or disassembly process, practical battery design, and dimensions that work with the vehicles and environments where the chair will actually be used.

A Portable Power Chair Should Be Easy to Move Between Places

Can it be charged separately from the chair?
What is its capacity?

Are additional batteries available?
A removable battery can make a chair easier to transport because it may reduce lifting weight.
It can also become particularly important when traveling by air.
8. Air Travel Adds Another Meaning to “Portable”
For many people, portability means more than fitting a chair into a car.
It also means traveling.
Powered wheelchairs and mobility devices can be transported by air, but battery-powered mobility equipment is subject to specific aviation safety requirements.
The Federal Aviation Administration's guidance for wheelchairs and mobility devices explains how different battery types are handled during air transportation.
For lithium-ion-powered mobility devices, battery installation, protection, removal and watt-hour ratings can affect how the device and battery must be transported. The FAA currently provides specific provisions for wheelchair and mobility-device lithium-ion batteries up to 300 watt-hours under qualifying circumstances, along with limits for spare batteries.
This is an important reason to know the exact specifications of a power chair battery rather than simply describing a chair as “airline approved.”
Travelers should always verify the current requirements and contact their airline before departure.

DOT provides information about wheelchair assistance, loading and stowing assistive devices, disability-related accommodations and the protections provided under the Air Carrier Access Act.
For frequent travelers, portability therefore includes both the physical design of the chair and the documentation needed to travel with it confidently.
9. Portability Should Not Come at the Expense of Comfort
There is a temptation to assume that the smallest and lightest chair is automatically the best choice.

A power chair is still something a person may spend hours sitting in.
